Phoenix, Arizona is the largest city in Arizona and the 5th largest city in the United States by population. Central Phoenix is the heart of the city and spans approximately from 19th Ave east to 24th St, and from Jefferson St north to Glendale Ave, which includes the districts of Downtown (Jefferson St to McDowell Rd, zip codes 85003, 85004, 85006, 85007, and a bit of 85009), Midtown (McDowell Rd to Bethany Home Rd, zip codes 85012, 85013, 85014, and 85015), and Uptown (Bethany Home Rd to Glendale Rd, zip codes 85020 and 85021). This area encompasses the original city center, many of the city and state government buildings, numerous commercial and residential high-rises, Arizona State University's downtown campus, the Phoenix Convention Center, the Footprint Center (home to the Phoenix Suns NBA and Phoenix Mercury WNBA teams), and Chase Field (home to the Arizona Diamondbacks MLB team). It is also home to Phoenix's burgeoning arts & culture scene, museums and parks, diverse dining and entertainment options, and many of Phoenix's 35 designated historic districts. For golfers, there's the private Phoenix Country Club, and public courses at Palo Verde Golf Course and Encanto Park. Valley Metro Light rail has been instrumental in the rapid growth and redevelopment of Downtown Phoenix. Opening in late December 2008, light rail provided a direct link from Arizona State University's main campus in Tempe to its newly-expanded Phoenix campus, increasing the residential population from around 3,000 to over 13,000 nearly overnight. A number of ASU's colleges have moved downtown, including the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and several health sciences schools. Today, residential mid- and high-rises are popping up all over the area as people are attracted to the central city lifestyle and its ever-expanding shopping, dining, and arts & entertainment options. The light rail itself is expanding as well, tying more and more of Metro Phoenix together. Several expansions are complete, and several more are due to open in 2024. Routes now run from Mesa's Main Street and arts & entertainment districts into Tempe with several stations on the ASU campus, then on to Downtown Phoenix past Chase Field, Phoenix Convention Center, Footprint Center, and Cityscape. From there it runs north along Central Avenue past the Roosevelt Row Arts District (home to First Fridays Artwalk), newly-renovated Park Central Mall, and quite a number of gastropubs, music venues, museums and parks. At Camelback Rd it veers west to 19th Avenue and proceeds north to Dunlap Ave, and will connect to the massively redeveloping Metro Center by the end of January 2024. The 5+ mile expansion from downtown Phoenix to South Phoenix at Central Ave and Baseline Rd will also open in 2024. Housing here is as eclectic as it can be, from multimillion dollar mansions and luxury high-rises to historic bungalows and Spanish Revivals from the 1900's and mid century modern ranchers from the 1950's, to condos and townhouses of every type. Whatever your taste, you can probably find it here! Central Phoenix has quick access to everything in the valley, with I-17 on its western border, SR 51 on its eastern border, and I-10 running through downtown (under Margaret T. Hance Park via the deck park tunnel). Resources:
