Carefree is a small town north of Scottsdale in the northeast area of Metro Phoenix Arizona. Nestled in the beautiful Sonoran Desert, Carefree offers a unique main street experience with a backdrop of stunning vistas and unique shops and restaurants that provide an experience you can't find anywhere else in the sprawl of Phoenix.
At the heart of the town is the Carefree Gardens featuring over 50 species of desert flora and fauna, the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion which hosts a wide array of events year round, the world-famous sundial, and charming 100% local shops, galleries and restaurants. For visitors, Carefree also offers excellent accommodations at the Hampton by Hilton in Town Center, or the world class Civana Wellness Resort. Carefree is also the gateway to the many outdoor amenities such as the Tonto National Forest and Bartlett Lake. The Town of Carefree has a long-standing tradition of miniscule growth. While the airport and first golf club were built with the initial shops and restaurants in the 1960's, by the 1970's only 300 homes had been built, and the town was not actually incorporated until the 1980's. Since then it has attracted people looking to live in wide open spaces with unobstructed views, and the population is still less than 4,000 official residents. Residents have a choice of condominiums, townhomes and single family homes. The town's Desert Forest Golf Club is private and exclusive, limited to 250 members. The course was designed by Robert "Red" Lawrence and opened in 1962, and is believed to be the first desert golf course ever built. There are no residences on the course.
